We Create Music Together

Bach to Basics, was founded by Shruti Kuruvilla on the principle that music can be appreciated and learnt by everyone. Our online lessons have opened doors to students from all over the world and enabled us to spread our love for music beyond geographical boundaries. Bach to Basics aims to build a community of music lovers, where students and teachers alike, are caught in the constant wheel of learning, appreciating and growing.

About the Founder

Shruti Kuruvilla, a banker by profession and Trinity Grade pianist by passion, decided to teach piano while on maternity leave in 2010. It was during this time that she discovered there were not enough music schools in India, that could relate to the younger generation, make western classical music fun and inculcate in them a love for music too. With further encouragement from her mentor Sangeeta Tahilliani (Founder of the Sheela Symphony School in Bangalore), she started connecting with like-minded music lovers in Chennai. This led to the birth of the Bach to Basics in the year 2015.

Our Strengths

Our students are given the option to enroll for the graded music exams conducted by the Trinity College, London at their local centres. We have an unbroken record of ninety percent of our students achieving distinctions in the exams, till date. However, Bach to Basics is not an exam driven music school. While we enjoy the success of our students at the exam, we by no means believe, that the exam is the only indicator of a student’s progress. Therefore, our students are always given a choice to attempt the exam. To showcase our student’s music proficiency and to get them comfortable with performing for an audience, we hold formal recitals twice a year. This, we believe, is a true testament to their growth as musicians. We have witnessed students from our group music program (for children under the age of six) reach great musical heights over the years, taking on their formal education in music with confidence, armed with a strong foundation and an innate love for music.

Learn from the Best

Our teachers are all formally trained musicians, with many of them graduating from KM Music Conservatory Chennai, Middlesex University UK and other prestigious universities around the world. Many of them are composers and producers in their own right, some having collaborated with A.R. Rahman and other renowned names in the music scene. Credentials aside, our teachers have a common thread that connects them all, and that is the love to share their musical knowledge. Our teachers are specifically trained to understand the psychology of a child at the cusp of development, as well as an adult student who might be entering the world of music at a much later stage of life. Our teachers are constantly learning from each other and ensure to adapt their lessons according to the personal needs of every student.

What people say

Piano Keys

My daughter started to take singing classes last year at ‘Bach to basics’. The idea was simply to strengthen her lungs and be able to hold a note for longer. But her sessions at this wonderful school of music, have left her with so much more. A deeper appreciation for music, stronger vocal cords and a whole lot of confidence and finesse in presenting her skill on stage. Thank you Bach to Basics!
